My goal is to inspire African American females to embrace their natural kinks and curls! I have a very "change the world" type of personality, which is a good thing for me lol. Most black females think that having "natural hair" is bad because it's not what "society" is praising (at the moment.) BUT hopefully if I can change that motto along with my other 1, 000,000 natural/nappy/kinky/curly headed sistas. Now i'm not knocking any one with relaxers, I'm just simply trying to make it be known that natural is what WE truly are. Having natural hair requires alotttttt of attention, time, and patience but I truly think that it's all worth it. My hair growth is crazy, it's only been five months since I did my BC (big chop), and my hair is down to my shoulders now. Crazy right?
The first 5 questions I usually get about my hair goes in this order lol:
Why did you go natural?
I decided to go natural because I was getting so bored with relaxers. It was to the point where I became dependent on relaxers. I wouldn't go anywhere when my hair wasn't "straight" at the roots. I use to get sores and burns from them and plus I use to get them almost once every month, which is very often because according to studies, you're only supposed to get them about once every 2 or 3 months. So yeah, I was horrible with relaxed hair. I also love love love to inspire people, I live for that! When I went natural, I wanted to let black women know that you can still be beautiful with THEIR hair texture. Good hair is healthy hair, no matter what the type or texture is.
When did you go natural?
I went natural on July 7th, 2010. I think I had less than an inch of hair. My mother did not want me to do it at ALL, but she accepted that it was something that I wanted to do.
How did you go natural?
I transitioned with bantu knots, which are basically two-strand twist that you wrap around into a little ball. I chose this method because I'm really not a weave person and I didn't wanna damage the little amount of natural hair that I did have with heat from hot combing and flat ironing. PLUS hot combing was worse than getting a relaxer LOL.
What products do you recommend?
I am such a product junkie (covers face) :/ lol. I've used and tried soooooo many products, but I guess it's something that all naturals go through. As my hair is getting longer, I use less products. When I had my TWA (teeny weeny afro), I used Carols Daughter Hair Milk and Miss Jessie's baby butter as my twist moisturizer and Garnier Frutise (shampoo/conditioner) in the dark green bottle. I used Olive Oil deep conditioner as well. Now i'm using a conditioner called EO, it works soooooo good. I love that stuff! Still using the Garnier products tho. Still using the Miss Jessies sometimes but it's too expensive for my college pockets so i've started using Shea Moisture smoothie. As far as oils, I use olive oil, Carols Daughter honey hair mimosa, and Africa's Best Herbal Oil. I'm in love with Giovanni's weightless leave in conditioner. OH and before I forget, I've been using ECO styler Olive Oil gel.
What do you do to your hair to keep it maintained?
I basically twist it up every night, if I don't it'll get all tangled up and smushed together -_-. Hopefully as it gets longer, i'll be able to just put it up in a puff and take it down.
